Hearing Aid and Telephone Usage

If you have a very mild loss of hearing it is
possible you can use the hearing aid itself on
the telephone.  A number of people do remove
the hearing aid for telephone usage due to feedback.  There is another option and that is getting a telephone switch put into your hearing aid. This can be put into the all in the ear low profile, half shell, and canal type hearing aids.

Generally if it is a smaller than normal canal aid it may not be able to have a telephone switch.  The telephone switch works by shutting off the microphone and going into a coil pick up system.  The coil of the hearing aid senses the magnetic pulses from the telephone ear piece and converts it into an amplified speech signal.   A recent development is the automatic telephone switch where you just hold the phone up to the aid and it  switches automatically.  Both systems work very well unless your telephone is not hearing aid compatible.  Sometimes a phone can be stated as “hearing aid compatible” but that may only mean the shape.  You have to make certain that the telephone is hearing aid telephone coil compatible.  A telephone coil can be used with neck loops, which plug into telephones.  Tele-coils can also be used in loop systems, which are starting to be available in different commercial areas.  If your hearing doesn’t have a telephone system you can get an amplified telephone.  Please refer to the product section.
